- Two successful fund-raising events were held during the summer of 2010. Watch this space for what we have to offer in 2011.

Short Story Competition - Closing date July 15th 2011

- Winners Announced - 2011 Tenby Arts Festival Writing Competition Robert Smith Tenby Arts Festival Writing competition judge, Simone Mansell Broome, pictured, has awarded first, second and third prizes respectively for the three best short stories and three best poems entered for the Tenby Arts Festival 2011 Writing Competition. Two additional prizes have been awarded, in this the competition’s second year. These prizes are for the best short story and best poem entered by writers resident in West Wales. Simone was delighted to make the awards, remarking on the high standards achieved and her enjoyment on reading the poems and short stories entered. The prize winners were announced at an afternoon event , “Words and Music”, held on Tuesday at the Caffe Vista. Simone Mansell Broome with Robert Smith, the competition organiser, between them read all eight winning entries to an enthusiastic audience who also enjoyed, between the readings, the guitar playing and singing of Karl Griffiths, a versatile young musician with a special talent for the blues. The prize winners are – for the short story, First Prize, Mr Ian Burton of Bournemouth; Second Prize, Ms Judy Goodburn of Wetherby; and Third Prize, Mr Alex McClimens of Sheffield. For the poetry category, First Prize, Mr Roger Elkin of Stoke-on-Trent; Second Prize, Mr John Godfrey of Hitchin; and Third Prize, Ms Margaret Eddershaw of Nafplion, Greece. The prize for the best short story entered by a writer resident in West Wales is awarded to Caroline Clark of Aberystwyth, with the prize for the best poem awarded to Emily Hinshelwood of Ammanford. The competition attracted a total of 250 entries. The gender split is exactly the same as last year with women submitting 60% of the entries, and men 40%. Interestingly, men are less keen on writing short stories than women – the women outnumber the men two to one – but men are equally enthusiastic when it comes to writing poetry with the ratio perfectly balanced at one to one. The prize winning group of eight comprises four men and four women. The battle of the sexes is therefore drawn, which, of course, is just as it should be! Entries received from writers resident in Wales accounted for one third of the total entry, with half of the Welsh contingent having West Wales home addresses. England accounted for 56% of the entry, with the rest of the UK contributing 10%. Entries were also received from France, Greece, Portugal and Ireland. Overall, an excellent competition for which all contributors are to be warmly congratulated.
