“ Poetry and music at the Caffé Vista”

Venue: Caffe Vista

Time: 7.30 – 9.30pm

Details: Join Tenby born performance poet Simone Mansell Broome and guitarists
Richard Ellin and Paul Uden for an evening of verbal and musical entertainment.

Simone lived in Tenby, in Upper Frog Street, as a young child. She
wrote compulsively as a schoolgirl, then put down her pen at twenty.
She started writing again in December 2004 and hasn’t stopped since.
She writes poems and short stories and is currently working on her
third collection, a CD of performance poems and a novel.

Simone writes about love, lust, parenthood, childhood, life, death,
ageing and self-image, illness, travel and anything that strikes her
sense of the absurd. Not many nightingales and little overt politics.
She’s got a strong sense of irony, hates pretentiousness and is
incurably nosey. Some of her writing is funny, some poignant – all of
it is accessible and engaging.

In the last few years Simone’s won a number of poetry competitions,
including Winchester Writers’ Conference and Leaf Books, been placed
and commended in many more, represented Wales in the BBC Radio 4
Performance Poetry slam, been heard on both local radio and BBC Radio
Wales, won the Denbigh Festival Slam, performed in all sorts and sizes
of venues around Wales and beyond, been published in magazines and
anthologies. She runs a small centre for groups and workshops in
Carmarthenshire, chairs a local writing group and hosts a successful
spoken word night, ‘Word Up’. Some of her work is being included in
‘Voices of Women in Wales’, to be published in March 2010.

Simone will be accompanied by two local acoustic musicians, Richard
Ellin and Paul Uden , both experienced guitarists. Paul has been a
professional musician for over thirty years, performing and recording
with, amongst others, Kiki Dee and Herbie Flowers. Richard began his
musical career playing the violin in the Portsmouth Sinfonia. He runs
two record labels, a CD replication company and a music magazine and is
an accomplished classical guitarist.

Quotes about Simone -

'lively, skilful and perceptive - Simone hits the
nail squarely on the head in areas so many
poets never even reach'
Phil Bowen.

She writes with panache about some
uncomfortable things - things like skin.
